There are numerous books and online references to help build a green home. Here are two websites to check out as starting points for more information links - www.usgbc.org, and www.nahbrc.org
In early 2008 the International Code Council (ICC) and the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) will release a new Nation Green Home Standard. This standard will compete with the USGBC LEED for homes program which many home builders say is not a fair treatment of their industry’s economic and market driven practices.
This NGHS code will score a home in a similar manner to the USGBC LEED program. The difference is that the ICC authored code will be positioned next to the industry standard International Residential Code (IRC is the home building ‘rule book’ for most US city planning and permitting departments). It is possible this new green home standard will be applied to home building within adopting cities on a national level.
So here is your only chance! As of August 2007, the National Association of Home Builders is welcoming direct comments. Visit http://www.nahbrc.org/technical/standards/gbfirstdraft.aspx and download the entire draft, or specific chapters, plus the official feedback form and take action!
