Gary Beck, ECO's owner engineer has been a Texas P.E. since 1981. He is SECB Certified in the Practice of Structural Engineering, Gary is LEED Accredited by the US Green Buildng Council for Leadership in Environmental and Energy Design, and was recently recognized by his engineering piers for his 'Alternate Buildings Systems - Lesson Learned' presentation to the Texas Section of the American Society of Civil Engineers.
Gary Beck is also a Listed Engineer for the Texas Department of Insurance Wind Storm Program. The new Seabrook Sailing Club, now well under construction, was designed and engineered by ECO.
A typical engineering project starts... with a customer's Architectural plans. These 'A' plans can be on paper or can be electronic. We review the 'A' pages for layout, apply loads (material, occupancy, wind, etc).
We then determine... lumber and beam sizes for the framing, and develop a foundation design that matches the soil and the architectural design. If an item requires a design change to the architectural pages, we discuss this with the builder or his designer. We then create structural ('S') pages in AutoCAD or AutoDesk Revit 3D that contain all the details needed to estimate and build a project. Our 'S' pages are printed, reviewed, stamped and signed by our engineer.
The owner or builder then... takes his A pages and Eco's 'S' pages (called 'Construction Documents' or 'CDs') to be priced by contractors and tradesmen, and then to be permitted for construction. The CDs are then used to build each stage of the project. We provide foundation and frame inspections if requested.
The above rendering is from a recent 2D to 3D design conversion. We also converted it from 2x4 framing to SIP frame construction, and added several green features.
A 3D design capability also provides better understanding of how you will build before you start, but also during different phases of construction.
When your builder or contractor can the structural design in 3D, they can decide if improvements can be made, or if construction sequencing can be altered. During the design phase, it is also easy to change structural choices like wood frame to SIPs or SIPs to concrete blocks. 3D modeling also helps us to provide better structural detailing, better electrical or HVAC layouts, better insulation choices, and more accurate material take-offs.
